One student is curious, well-rounded, and sees possibilities in a variety of majors. Another is undecided on what career might be best, and he or she doesn’t feel ready to commit to a major. Still another fears that by deciding now, they’d be ruling out potential opportunities and limiting their future.
If you’re undecided about your college major, take a breath—because that’s okay. You are not alone. Nearly 20% of our incoming students have an undeclared/undecided major or, as Taylor calls it, a Pre-Major.
With more than 60 majors to choose from, Taylor is bound to have majors that will interest you. Because of our liberal arts curriculum, you will have the opportunity to sample a variety of disciplines and prepare for a diverse range of career opportunities.
Even if you think you already know what you want to study, it can be beneficial to first explore all that Taylor can offer. Being a Pre-Major will make you more confident in the major you do choose, because you will have spent time considering your options and determining the best path for you.
Also, remember that choosing a major doesn’t set your career path in stone; it simply allows you to build skills and knowledge in a field that interests you. Of the students who declare their major early, a large percentage of students still switch their majors during their time at Taylor.
Sit down with our Calling and Career Office to discuss possible majors or careers that line up with your passions, gifts, and goals. Our Pre-Majors even have their own academic advisor, Trina Hartman, who invests time into exploring potential next steps for you, leading you to make confident academic and career-related decisions.
You have until junior year to declare your major, so take your time in making this decision. Look at different majors and their curriculum guides. Note the classes that sound fun or interesting. Reach out to professors in those departments and enroll in those classes. We are confident that you will narrow down your major search in no time, and we hope to help you make a smooth transition into whatever discipline you choose.
Once you have tried Taylor’s Pre-Major and found which major is right for you, fill out this form and submit it to our Registrar’s Office to declare your new major.
